OP Stack Superchain: shared sequencing and atomic cross-rollup composability
Quote321 words
Explains how a shared sequencer across OP Stack chains can guarantee atomic cross-rollup transactions, making the Superchain feel like one logical chain. Notes limits since the sequencer does not execute transactions, and points to Shared Validity Sequencing.
Key claims
Rollups sharing a sequencer set enable atomic cross-rollup composability
The sequencer does not execute transactions, which limits cases like mint and burn bridging
Great take on the OP stack by my friend @thesaint_
Very excited about the #Superchain concept myself
The $OP stack makes building L2s easy (even more so if done through an IaaS provider like @Calderaxyz)
Also, abstracting one of the most complicated parts of building an L2 (namely the sequencer), it creates the opportunity to scale Optimism’s values across an entire network of interconnected blockchains (with shared sequencing at its core).
What do I mean by that?
When multiple rollups share a sequencer set, this enables atomic cross-rollup composability, which in turn enables a broad array of cross-chain use cases!
Why?
In the Superchain vision, it makes a lot of sense to think about OP-Stack based chains as (app-specific) shards of a monolithic chain. Since the shared sequencer produces blocks on multiple chains simultaneously, the sequencer, that essentially acts as the block producer, can guarantee atomic interactions between these networks.
This works because there is a single entity that proposes blocks to the rollup nodes of all the chains plugged into the $OP sequencer. Hence, these chains don’t necessarily need to rely on other validators to include these atomic transactions.
This is a slightly simplified explanation and there are some limitations here, since the sequencer doesn't execute transactions and there is contingency on other rollups actually executing the atomic transactions that the shared sequencer proposes, which might make some use cases (like mint & burn bridging) a bit harder to realize. But the possibilities this enables are BIG!
Also, there are solutions to address this as well. One concept I'm particularly excited about is Shared Validity Sequencing (SVS). Make sure to follow me and stay tuned for an explainer on SVS! 👀
But back to @optimismFND's Superchain vision:
Even though the overall network is made up of multiple chains, the atomic cross-chain interaction functionality outlined above means that to the user it will feel like a single logical chain.
