Explains why general purpose zkVMs matter: R0 proves arbitrary Rust code without custom circuits, and the Universal Verifier lets any chain verify those proofs. Links Zeth's provable Optimism block building to simpler fault proofs and eventual validity proofs on the OP Stack.

The R0 Universal Verifier is coming to @Optimism @base & @arbitrum.
TL;DR 👇
🟡 Why you should care about Risc Zero
The ZK infrastructure space is just getting started but it will grow into a billion $$$ industry in the coming months & years.
@RiscZero is a leader in the game and a true pioneer in building general purpose Zero Knowledge Virtual Machines that allow you to prove ANY computation as opposed to "only EVM computation in the case of "zkEVMs".
The RISC Zero zkVM R0 is based on the RISC-V instruction set and can prove the correct execution of arbitrary code.
It allows developers to build ZK applications in languages like Rust and C++.
The big breakthrough of the zkVM is making it possible to build a ZK application without having to build a circuit (very complex) and without writing in a custom language (friction for devs).
By allowing devs to build in Rust and leverage the maturity of the Rust ecosystem, the zkVM makes it easy for devs to quickly build meaningful ZK apps.
No background in advanced mathematics or cryptography needed.
🟡 Why the Universal Verifier matters
@RiscZero's Universal Verifier enables blockchains & devs to harness verifiable off-chain execution, computing without limits.
Devs can run Rust programs in RISC Zero's zkVM that produce proofs, which can then be verified on-chain seamlessly.
🧠 This will allow us to "prove anything & verify everywhere".
The Universal Verifier empowers developers with the ability to harness verifiable offchain execution.
This means they can run Rust programs in RISC Zero's zkVM, produce proofs, and seamlessly verify them on-chain.
The expressivity offered by loading Rust crates allows developers to perform complex tasks, such as:
✦ Verifying JSON Web Tokens (JWTs)
✦ Parsing HTML
✦ Building games with real game engines
This capability to compute without limits significantly enhances the flexibility and potential of decentralized applications (dApps).
Users will hence experience on-chain dApps that closely resemble traditional Web2 applications.
With the launch of our Universal Verifier on mainnet, devs can scale dApps directly on L1 by outsourcing computation off-chain, while still having execution validity verified on-chain.
This reduces costs and enhances user experience while leveraging Ethereum’s liquidity.
The Universal Verifier contract seamlessly integrates @RiscZero's proof system into Ethereum, enabling off-chain execution and enhanced privacy.
⚠️ But that's not all.
The Universal Verifier will also deploy in all major L2 ecosystems, including @Arbitrum, @Optimism or @base.
It will empower devs with ZK-powered scalability to compute without limits, unlocking verifiable offchain execution for these thriving ecosystems.
🟡 Bringing ZK Proofs to the OP Stack
In August 2023, RISC Zero released Zeth, an open-source ZK block prover for Ethereum built on the RISC Zero zkVM.
Zeth now supports the provable building and deriving of Optimism blocks from the Ethereum mainnet, verifying those succinct proofs on-chain.
This integration utilizes pre-existing crates like revm, alloy, and ethers, allowing for a smooth integration with @Optimism's infrastructure and showcasing @RiscZero's commitment to the OP Stack.
This expands ZK-backed possibilities across the Superchain ecosystem, including the potential introduction of a much more simplified fraud-proving process and full-validity proofs, which is in line with @Optimism's vision of building out the Superchain ecosystem.
An ecosystem that will consist of a broad spectrum of vertical- and app-specific rollups that share governance & upgradeability within an interoperable framework that allows for customization of the underlying OP stack.
In the context of proof modularity, the OP stack aims to be versatile with regards to the supported state validation mechanisms and @RiscZero's technology is first to enable ZK-powered OP stack rollups out of the box.
@RiscZero's Universal Verifier will be crucial for resolving disputes on the correctness of the txs executed in the L2, and disputes which transactions should comprise the "true" chain.
@RiscZero's work also validates the original thesis about general-purpose zkVMs, which enable simpler fault proofs for the OP ecosystem and eventually even fully validity proofs based state valudation.
ZK is the endgame and the future is verified. ✨
