Giga Sei: Scaling the EVM to Web2-Level Performance
Over $167B or 83% of the overall web3 TVL is locked in EVM apps.
Yet, the EVM has historically suffered under significant scalability constraints.
A limitation that Giga Sei is about to shatter, scaling the EVM to 200k TPS, and leading it into a new era of web2-scale performance.
Time to DYOR ↓
1 ) Setting the Stage
Web2 services regularly handle well over 100,000 TPS with near-instantaneous responsiveness. In comparison, high-performance blockchains like Solana peak near 65,000 TPS, with Ethereum significantly lower at approximately 15 TPS.
To make web3 competitive at scale, we need to reach the same levels of performance onchain, empowering dApps to support millions of users, and provide a UX that can finally rival the web2 counterparts.
Having led blockchains into the age of programmability, the EVM has established itself as the de-facto standard for onchain app development over the past decade.
However, the scalability of EVM implementations has largely remained constrained at approximately 100 TPS with latency ranging from seconds to minutes, depending on the chain design.
A longstanding barrier holding back app layer innovation that @SeiNetwork has just turned into a concern of the past with the release of the Giga Sei whitepaper.
This major network upgrade means:
→ L1 with parallel execution
→ 5 GIGA gas / second (~200,000 TPS)
→ Consistent <400ms finality
→ 50x faster than fastest EVM chain
So why is Giga Sei built different?
2 ) Breaking Down the Tech Stack
Giga Sei employs a sophisticated parallel multi-proposer architecture, innovating beyond traditional single-proposer systems such as Tendermint.
By enabling multiple validators to concurrently propose blocks across independent lanes, Giga Sei effectively eliminates the bottlenecks associated with the sequential block proposals previously inherent to the EVM, dramatically enhancing both throughput and network resilience.
The core innovation underpinning this performance is the "Autobahn" consensus protocol. Autobahn achieves consensus in approximately 1.5 communication round-trips, significantly outperforming the three-round protocol utilized by Sei v2 (see visual below).
This substantial reduction in communication overhead translates directly into lower latency per block and markedly increased transaction throughput, enabling a roughly 50x improvement in throughput compared to Sei v2 (the fastest EVM chain currently live).
Autobahn introduces additional innovations such as the "tip-cut" aggregation method, periodically aggregating concurrent block proposals into a compact snapshot. This allows multiple blocks to be committed simultaneously within a single consensus round, enabling the market-leading sub-400ms finality.
Furthermore, Autobahn leverages a Proof-of-Availability (PoA) mechanism, requiring only about one-third of the network to attest data availability, which significantly optimizes geographic distribution and overall network latency.
Another key feature is Giga Sei's clear separation of consensus from execution. Transactions are ordered independently and asynchronously from their execution, ensuring uninterrupted block production regardless of computational load.
By implementing asynchronous state commitments instead of traditional synchronous methods reliant on immediate Merkle tree updates, Giga Sei significantly reduces finality latency by approximately 70%.
This decoupling approach optimizes resource utilization, maintains high throughput, and eliminates execution bottlenecks typical in conventional blockchain architectures.
3 ) Meet the Sei EVM
On top of that infrastructure sits Giga Sei’s execution layer, a.k.a. the Sei EVM, which was rebuilt from scratch to maximize computational efficiency and parallel execution capabilities.
Unlike conventional EVM implementations such as reth or geth, the Sei EVM utilizes optimistic concurrency control (OCC) to concurrently process non-conflicting transactions (which on Ethereum as an example are roughly 65% of all transactions), thereby drastically increasing the tx throughput.
The Sei EVM further employs advanced parallelization techniques in transaction parsing, ECDSA address recovery, nonce verification, intrinsic gas calculations, and signature validation improvements, collectively delivering the approximately 50x improved execution efficiency compared to contemporary EVM chains.
On the storage front, Giga Sei diverges significantly from standard Merkle-tree-based storage models, adopting a novel flat key-value storage system integrated with asynchronous cryptographic accumulators.
This approach ensures constant-time (O(1)) state updates, crucial for maintaining the targeted throughput of 5 GigaGas/sec.
By eliminating synchronous Merkle path recalculations and adopting asynchronous data persistence, Giga Sei significantly reduces storage overhead, enhancing operational efficiency under heavy load.
All while the Sei EVM maintains full compatibility with Ethereum smart contracts written in Solidity and Vyper, facilitating seamless integration with existing EVM apps and ecosystems.
This positions it right alongside soon-to-be-launched high-performance EVM chains like @monad_xyz or @megaeth, and puts @SeiNetwork into direct competition with non-EVM chains optimized for scalability, including @solana, @aptos or @SuiNetwork.
Okay cool, but what are the use cases?
4 ) New Use Cases
Ushering in the age of real-time EVM execution, Giga Sei is a crucial enabler for many apps that were not feasible within the constraints of the EVM chains currently on the market.
That includes:
→ Institutional-Grade Decentralized Finance: Real-time high-frequency trading platforms, sophisticated derivatives markets, and instant transaction settlement.
→ Interactive Gaming: Seamless multiplayer blockchain-based gaming with real-time interactivity matching centralized gaming services.
→ Decentralized Social Networks: Responsive, interactive social media platforms enabling real-time engagement comparable to traditional social networks.
→ Enterprise Blockchain Solutions: Scalable solutions for real-time data analytics, transparent supply-chain traceability, and robust verification of data integrity suitable for large-scale corporate environments.
→ Real-Time Transaction Platforms: Applications demanding immediate confirmation and execution, including decentralized exchanges, automated market makers, and payment systems.
→ High-Throughput Data Applications: Large-scale IoT networks, real-time oracle integrations, and applications requiring rapid state updates and efficient data management.
5 ) Conclusion
With the launch of Giga Sei, @SeiNetwork has introduced a fundamentally new performance paradigm for EVM-based blockchains. By effectively dismantling the historical bottlenecks associated with single-proposer consensus and synchronous execution, Giga Sei achieves web2-scale performance, providing an unprecedented ~200,000 TPS at sub-400ms finality.
Its robust and sophisticated architecture, featuring the novel "Autobahn" consensus, asynchronous execution, a purpose-built Sei EVM client, and a novel storage design, not only positions Sei far ahead of existing EVM implementations but also competes directly with high-performance, non-EVM chains.
From institutional DeFi and enterprise blockchain solutions to real-time gaming and social platforms, Giga Sei unlocks previously unattainable use cases, and it will undoubtedly be interesting to see what impact this significant base layer improvement will have on the app layer ecosystem as the upgrade goes is rolled out.
