Ring signatures explained and how Monero uses them
Thread429 words
Explains ring signatures: a group signs anonymously with personal keys, anyone can verify membership in the ring but not the signer. Needs no central group manager unlike group signatures, and is used by Monero.
Key claims
Ring signatures need no central authority, unlike group signatures
Monero is the most prominent chain using ring signatures
0/ What are Ring Signatures? 🧙♂️✨
(0/16) 🧵👇
1/ Ring signatures are a privacy technology that aims to keep user's identities private when making (signing) transactions in public #blockchain networks
2/ In ring signature schemes, a group of users, called the "ring," can sign a message anonymously using their personal secret keys.
3/ A third party with the common public key of the ring can verify the generated signature, but cannot determine which specific user in the ring signed the message.
5/ Ring signatures provide a higher level of anonymity compared to group signatures, as they do not require any central authority or group manager (as opposed to the very similar group signatures used in private & consortium chains)
6/ To understand how ring signatures work, let's consider an example scenario. Alice, Bob, and Carol are members of a ring and want to sign a message anonymously. To do this, they follow these steps:
7/ Alice, Bob, and Carol each generate a public key and a corresponding private key using a cryptographic key generation algorithm.
8/ Alice, Bob, and Carol each share their public keys with each other, forming the common public key of the ring.
9/ Alice wants to sign a message m for the entire ring anonymously using her private key. She does this by generating a ring signature s using her private key and the common public key of the ring.
10/ Alice sends the message m and the ring signature s to Bob and Carol.
11/ Bob and Carol use the common public key to verify the ring signature s and confirm that it was produced by a member of the ring. However, they cannot determine which specific member of the ring (Alice, Bob, or Carol) signed the message.
12/ The message m and the ring signature s are now considered to be a signed message that can be verified by any third party with the common public key of the ring.
13/ This example illustrates how ring signatures can be used to provide anonymity for users in a group, such as in a public blockchain network.
14/ By using a combination of cryptographic techniques, such as key generation and signature generation, ring signature schemes enable users to sign messages anonymously without revealing their identities to third parties.
15/ As mentioned above, this can improve the privacy and security of transactions in public blockchain networks. The most prominent example of a blockchain using ring signatures to improve privacy is @monero ( $XMR ).
