Distributed Validator Technology for ETH staking: SSV, Obol and Stader
Thread574 words
Explains DVT, which splits a validator key and duties across several nodes to improve liveness and safety, and how Stader uses SSV for client, geographic and hardware fault tolerance.
Key claims
A DVT setup can tolerate offline nodes, e.g. 3 of 4 beacon nodes needed
Stader uses SSV to cut operator capital requirements
SSV mainnet expected within months

3/ āļø Introduction
before we deep dive into DVT, let's clarify the two primary components of the current #Eth2 validator architecture: the Beacon Node (BN) and the Validator Client (VC)
4/ BN handles P2P networking and interfaces directly with the #Eth2 network, while VC manages the validator keys and signs blocks
5/ āļø Key Concerns with the Current Structure
two primary challenges we must tackle are:
š¹ Liveness: We need to ensure BN remains online, or at least stays in sync with others.
š¹ Safety: The validator's private key must be secure and protected against potential threats.
6/ āļø Towards a More Resilient Network
a potential solution is to distribute the validator key among multiple validator clients. This approach bolsters key safety but doesn't entirely mitigate the single point of failure: the BN
7/ āļø An Optimized Setup
ideal validator infrastructure would comprise multiple VC and BN. #DVT Middleware connects these components, synchronizing their timings, thus reducing vulnerability. This technology shifts us from a single key holder model to a distributed one
8/ this setup can be likened to Voldemort's Horcruxes in Harry Potter. Like the multiple pieces hiding his power, only 3 out of 4 beacon nodes need to be online at any given time. This ensures backup and continuity for the #Eth2 validator
9/ āļø DVT: A New Paradigm:
in essence, #DVT resembles a treasure chest with numerous key holders, addressing #Ethereum staking's centralization and risk challenges. Pioneers such as @ObolNetwork and @ssv_network spearhead this transformation
10/ āļø How Stader uses DVT
@staderlabs collaborates with @ssv_network to leverage DVT's power, allowing optimized yields for stakers and reduced capital requirements for operators
see this link for more on #DVT pool's role in #ETHx š

11/ āļø Benefits of #DVT for @staderlabs:
operator fault tolerance: Validator keys are securely split between multiple non-trusting nodes, eliminating unilateral decision-making and ensuring validator functionality even with offline/malicious operators
12/ 1ļøā£ Client-level fault tolerance
stakers can select operators running different consensus clients, reducing risk from a specific client's failure
13/ 2ļøā£ Geographical fault tolerance
DVT enables choosing operators from diverse geographical regions, reducing the impact of regulatory changes
14/ 3ļøā£ Hardware fault tolerance
different cloud/hardware setups are possible, minimizing dependence on a single cloud service provider
15/ āļø DVT in Summary:
by employing P2P networks and cryptographic algorithms, #DVT achieves consensus. Validators collectively validate transactions, enhancing network security, resilience, and censorship resistance
16/ key advantages of #DVT include mitigating single-point failure risk, enhancing network transparency and trust, and boosting scalability. These contribute to a more efficient, resilient, and robust network
17/ āļø What's Next?
as per @ssv_network, we can expect the mainnet rollout in the upcoming months, providing a significant boost for $ETH staking and promoting network resilience and decentralization
