AI dystopia risk: big tech concentration in compute, talent and data
Quote225 words
Argues five big tech firms control distribution, compute, talent, capital and data for AI, risking an oligopolistic market. Sees open-source, verifiable computation and public blockchains as the counterweight.
Is the world at risk of facing an AI dystopia?
The big 5 tech companies are in control of the major distribution channels (products and use cases) for AI to reach mass adoption.
They (and the companies they fund, see post below) also control the majority of compute, which is a finite resource.
They have most of the talent working for them. Another finite resource.
They (for now) basically have infinite money.
What's most problematic though, is that these companies also posses huge amounts of data.
Wait, who am I talking about?

☞ @amazon
☞ @Apple
☞ @Microsoft
What that means is that they have huge advantages over any smaller competitor that tries to enter this market.
That could re-enforce an oligopolistic, or a potentially even more concentrated market structure than we already see today, as the winning companies take over more and more aspects of our lives with highly advanced, AI-powered technologies.
Imagining how powerful Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will be, that is a worrying thought, especially in a world where the models are owned by big tech, closed-source and run behind closed doors.
Open-source software, verifiable computation, and the decentralized trust layer that public blockchains provide are the anti-thesis that can fix this, enabling new ways of monetizing models or incentivizing builders.
Will talk more about this soon. 👀
