Where robotics stands today: solved factory automation vs the open frontier

Industrial automation in structured environments is mature and global, while the frontier of mobile, field and flexible manipulation is about reliability at scale and safety, which slows physical progress versus software.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆? The “solved” part of robotics is industrial automation in controlled environments. It’s not perfect, but it is mature enough that it scales globally. The International Federation of Robotics reported 4,281,585 industrial robots operating in factories worldwide (World Robotics 2024). And in the World Robotics 2025 statistics, IFR reports 542k+ industrial robots installed in 2024, with annual installations above 500k for 4+ consecutive years. That’s the “factory advantage”: tasks are repeatable, environments are structured, and safety boundaries can be engineered. When a robot arm welds or places components, you can constrain the world until the robot looks smart. The frontier is everything outside that comfort zone: mobile robots in crowded spaces, field robotics, flexible manipulation (grasping messy objects), and any scenario where the robot must reason under uncertainty for long periods. Here, the core difficulty is not “can it do a demo.” The core difficulty is reliability at scale: can it do the task safely, predictably, and economically thousands of times, including the weird 2% of cases. This is also why robotics is obsessed with safety and failure modes. A software bug in a web app is annoying. A software bug in a moving machine becomes kinetic. That pushes robotics teams toward conservative deployment: redundancy, safe-stop behavior, gradual rollouts, and careful monitoring. It also explains why physical progress can feel slower than pure software.
