LayerZero's Zero L1: institutional distribution, unproven execution
Quote330 words
Zero launches with backing from Citadel Securities, ARK, DTCC, ICE and Tether and claims of 2M TPS per zone. Live competitor Canton is further along, and 437M ZRO unlocking over 17 months dwarfs buybacks.
Key claims
437M ZRO unlocks over 17 months, more than doubling circulating supply
ZRO buybacks cover less than 1.5% of that pressure
Fee switch failed quorum three consecutive times
The tokenized securities market is projected to hit $16 trillion by 2030, and @LayerZero_Core positioned its newly announced L1 Zero to capture a piece of it.
Backed by partnerships with Citadel Securities, ARK Invest, DTCC, ICE and Tether on day one.
Built by the team behind the markets leading cross-chain messaging protocol, and with a war chest that is full after raising over $318M in total funding.
Almost no L1 has ever launched with that kind of institutional firepower behind it, and none has ever had 168 chains and 700+ apps already plugged into its messaging infrastructure before a single block was produced.
The technical claims are aggressive:
- 2M TPS per zone (heterogenous exeution envs)
- $0.000001 transaction costs
- ZK-verified execution across entire system
The individual components (QMDB, FAFO, Jolt Pro) have arXiv papers and open-source code, which puts them above most L1 launches on academic credibility.
But no integrated blockchain has ever come close to these numbers in production. @solana for reference, only achieves 2-6% of its theoretical ceiling after five years.
The competitive picture is more nuanced than the announcement suggests as well:
There is for example @CantonNetwork, which is already live and that is backed by Goldman, HSBC, BNP Paribas & 400+ institutions, while running $365B in daily repo volume through Broadridge today.
DTCC, one of Zero's headline partners, also simultaneously co-chairs Canton and is further along with tokenized Treasuries there (backed by an SEC no-action letter) than anything announced with Zero so far.
However, it's the token economics remain the most quantifiable risk:
- 437M ZRO unlocking over 17 months
- Means more than doubling circulating supply
- ZRO buybacks cover less than 1.5% of that pressure
The fee switch on messaging infra layer that could fix this has failed quorum three consecutive times (next vote in June)
TL;DR?
Tech is truly innovative.
Distribution moat is real.
Execution is entirely unproven (and building a sustainable L1 ecosystem is hard).
