Isolated Exposure Tokens: splitting a stock token into overnight and session legs
Explains Isolated Exposure Tokens, a Standard Reserve paper that splits one stock token into an OVERNIGHT and a SESSION leg, and rechecks the SPY overnight effect since 1993. The gap has shrunk a lot, so the value is in holding one part of the day, not free money.
Since 1993, SPY made 47x more holding only overnight than holding only during market hours.
@0xbeans just designed a way to own just one of those halves.
Isolated Exposure Tokens.
Deposit 1 stock token, get 2 back:
- OVERNIGHT earns every move from the close to the next open
- SESSION earns every move from the open to the close
Both start at half the share price, always add up to the share, and the pair redeems any time.
The paper's example: share at $160, both legs at $80. Overnight +$12, day -$6, weekend +$12, day -$8. Share ends at $170, OVERNIGHT at $104, SESSION at $66.
Why would you want just one half?
Bc historically, most of the stock market's gains came while it was closed.
Buy SPY at every close and sell at the next open, from 1993 to Nov 2025: +1,129%. Hold it only during market hours instead: +24%. Same ETF, same years.
I pulled every trading day since 1993 and recalculated it myself. It checks out.
But the gap has shrunk a lot. Since 2016: +125% overnight vs +68% during the day. Since 2021: +47% vs +40%. In 12 of the last 34 years, the day session actually won.
And IETs pay out dollar moves, not percentages. In dollars, one SPY share gained $504 overnight vs $124 during the day over that same window. More like 80/20 than "almost all of it overnight".
So OVERNIGHT won't be a free money token. If everyone knows nights tend to be green, the market prices that in.
What you do get is a way to hold just one part of the day. Earnings (most big companies report before the open or after the close), weekend news, the opening move. Each token starts at half the share price but catches the full dollar move, so it's roughly 2x exposure, with no borrowing and no liquidation.
It's only a paper so far (coming to Standard Reserve soon tho). On a wild stock like MSTR or GME, one leg can fall below zero before expiry, and the paper doesn't say yet what happens then. It's also not obvious who wants to hold SESSION (no classic fixed-rate buyer like on Pendle).
The idea is definitely cool tho
Bc take the idea further:
- a WEEKEND token: only Friday close to Monday open, the one window where the token trades and the share can't
- an EARNINGS token: one overnight gap per quarter
- a dividend strip: price-only and dividend-only legs
- gold split by its Asia, London and New York sessions
- tokenized bonds split into coupon and principal, STRIPS onchain
- much more
There's definitely a lot of possibilities here.
Which is why i do have to say: @standard_rsv is truly one of the few teams still shipping genuinely new mechanics. A reserve that seeds its own stock markets, pools whose fees follow the US session straight from block time, and now a paper that splits a share by the clock.
DeFi was supposed to be fun. Most of it turned into forks and points farms.
This is exactly the kind of stuff that should get us CT nerds excited again.
NFA tho ofc.
"imagine you take a stock token and make it programmable, like software, what can you do?" - vlad
i discuss in the paper below what i believe is a genuinely new financial primitive that is now only possible because of stock tokenization
i present, Isolated Exposure Tokens
