Celestia data availability explained, plus running a Mamaki light node
Thread434 words
Recaps the data availability problem and Celestia's modular DA and consensus layer, and notes the author is running a light node on the Mamaki testnet, contributing to data availability sampling and block size scaling.
Key claims
Rollup throughput is bounded by DA throughput
Celestia scales block verification with low-requirement light nodes via DA sampling
0/ @CelestiaOrg's data availability layer is one of the most fascinating things I came across doing my bear market research
and for a while now, @AurumMege and I have been running a light node on @CelestiaOrg's #Mamaki testnet
a 馃У on why that is exciting (0/14) 馃憞
1/but first of all, what is the problem #Celestia addresses?
@CelestiaOrg addresses the data availability problem, which refers to the question of how peers in a blockchain network can be sure that all the data of a newly proposed block is actually available
2/ if part of the data is not available, the block might contain malicious transactions which are being hidden by the block producer
3/ and even if the block contains non-malicious transactions, hiding transactions might compromise the security of the system
4/ this data availability problem is especially prominent in the context of #rollup systems. It is very important that sequencers have tx data available, as the rollup needs to know about the state of the network and account balances
5/ this also introduces limitations to #rollups in general. Because even if the sequencer was an actual supercomputer, the number of transactions it can actually process per second will be limited by the data throughput of the underlying data availability solution
6/ if the data availability solution used by a #rollup is unable to keep up with the amount of data the rollup鈥檚 sequencer wants to dump on it, the sequencer (and hence the rollup) can鈥檛 process more transactions regardless of its own technological capacity to do so
7/ so, what is #Celestia?
@Celestia is a modular, chain-agnostic data availability & consensus layer that provides rollups a highly scalable, decentralized & cheap DA solution with high security guarantees
8/ rather than scaling block production with hig req validator nodes, @CelestiaOrg scales block verification on its modular DA layer with low req light nodes, ensuring decentralization
9/ light nodes play an important role within the @CelestiaOrg network, guaranteeing data availability through data availability sampling on erasure coded blocks

11/ so, running a light node on @CelestiaOrg, we're contributing to the data availability sampling process, thereby increasing potential block size and scaling the network
