Vistara: one-click app-specific and sovereign rollups with modular components

Thread997 words

Breaks down Vistara's rollup-as-a-service where builders pick execution, sequencer, DA, interop and proving from a UI. Initially sovereign optimistic rollups on Celestia with Dymension settlement, with ZK via SHARP or Bonsai planned.

Key claims
Modular DA can abstract up to 90% of rollup cost
Initial focus on sovereign rollups, Celestia first DA option
ZK rollups planned once StarkWare SHARP is open-sourced
0/ Do you remember me talking about @vistaralabs? ๐Ÿ‘€ The rollup (or infrastructure) as a service provider, that builds the decentralized cloud infra for your dApps & lets you to deploy app-specific rollups in one click? ๐Ÿคฏ A reminder you of why Vistara will change the game! ๐Ÿ”ฅ 1/ And in case you don't remember at all and need the full breakdown again, check here! ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/zerokn0wledge_/status/1690002134933069826 2/ But I told you that I was going to remind you of why Vistara is so cool, so let me briefly do that! So, let's assume you want to build your own dApp. If you want to go for sub-optimal UX, you can just deploy your smart contracts on a general purpose chain like Ethereum. 3/ If you want full customization and optimization, you might want to build out your own L1 app-chain. But unfortunately, that is an expensive & difficult endeavour. 4/ Even though frameworks like the Cosmos SDK or Polkadot's Substrate have made life significantly easier for devs, spinning up the decentralized hardware network you need to safely run your app-chain is still a massive barrier of entry (due to cost). 5/ You hence might just opt to build a rollup to build an app-specific network that inherits security from Ethereum and is not dependent on its own validator set. 6/ Rollups are also a major stepping stone towards significantly reducing the cost & time needed by devs to turn their ideas & concepts into reality. 7/ The modular thesis, or basically piecing together the best fitting components to build modular networks that are highly customizable & performant, simplifies this even further. 8/ This is where @vistaralabs comes in! ๐Ÿš€ The goal of Vistara is to enable a vision of Web3 where deploying a rollup is as simple as selecting: ๐Ÿ”ธ Execution ๐Ÿ”ธ Sequencer ๐Ÿ”ธ DA Provider (๐Ÿ”ธ Settlement ) ๐Ÿ”ธ Interop Solution ๐Ÿ”ธ Proving Solution from a dropdown on Web UI! ๐Ÿคฏ 9/ So you literally choose your... ๐Ÿ”ธ Execution (EVM, FuelVM, CairoVM, CosmWasm, MoveVM, etc), ๐Ÿ”ธ Sequencer (Rollkit, Madara, Astria, Espresso, etc), ๐Ÿ”ธ DA layer (Celestia, Avail, Eigenlayer but even Bitcoin or Solana) 10/ ...maybe add an out-of-the-box interoperability solution (e.g @Hyperlane_xyz, or @ConnextNetwork), link the github repository where the smart contracts sit & deploy. BOOM, your app-specific rollup is live, all run on Vistara infrastructure and with all the tooling you need. 11/ So what you end up with in the example above is basically a fully modular sovereign app-chain that is optimized for its use case at every level of the tech stack and that has a number of scalability & interoperability benefits compared to "traditional" rollups. 12/ If you hear the term "sovereign rollup" for the first time, check out my thread below! ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/zerokn0wledge_/status/1677346784467914752 13/ For example, by posting tx data to a modular DA layer like @CelestiaOrg, @AvailProject & @eigencloud, a rollup can abstract up to 90% of cost! Why? Currently rollups have to post data onto Ethereum L1 by paying for calldata which is very limited per block & very expensive. 14/ For more on calldata & rollup costs, check here! ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/zerokn0wledge_/status/1661794274206445569 15/ Additionally, shared sequencers and DA layers have some interesting interoperability perks, enabling atomic composability between rollups sharing the sequencing solution. 16/ I touched upon this atomicity in my post on @optimismFND's #Superchain vision below! ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/zerokn0wledge_/status/1706265085662920714 17/ Initially, Vistara will focus on sovereign rollups that don't rely on a settlement layer for proof verification / fraud proving. It's also easy to integrate stacks like @Arbitrum Orbit or #OPStack into the framework (traditional rollups, with settlement layer) in the future. 18/ As of now, itโ€™s basically the Vimana full nodes that decide on the canonical chain of the rollups deployed and raw data is dumped onto the DA layer of choice (where Celestia is the first option available). 19/ In the future, itโ€™s also possible for app light clients (e.g. run in wallets) to embed an execution validity proof verifier and do DAS on @CelestiaOrg to โ€œautonomouslyโ€ settle the sovereign rollup without any need for proof verification on a settlement layer (in the ZK case). 20/ However, @vistaralabs is also working with @dymension, which can serve as settlement layers for rollups that choose a non-sovereign path. 21/ Check here for an impressive demo of how to deploy RollApps on @dymension using the @vistaralabs UI! ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/_mayurc/status/1689715957906702338 22/ Also, @vistaralabs rollups will initially be optimistic rollups and especially in this context the before-mentioned settlement layer @dymension is likely to play a key role as layer on which disputes / fraud proving can take place. 23/ However, ZK (or rather validity) rollups are on the roadmap! ๐Ÿš€ Once @StarkWareLtdโ€™s SHARP (shared prover) is open-sourced, the plan is to integrate this. However, they are also working with @RiscZero, which will offer a shared prover infrastructure as well (Bonsai). 24/ The idea is to offer multiple options here and for example also integrate Scrollโ€™s proving system (Halo2) down the road. The Vimana node layer can also serve as a decentralized proving layer, which is very interesting in my opinion! ๐Ÿ‘€ 25/ What is super interesting as well, is the Vimana node layer! ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/vistaralabs/status/1706704623002591411 26/ The Vimana node infra layer could also serve as a sort of aggregation layer for validity proofs produced by the different rollups to post an aggregate proof onto the DA layer(s). A lot of potential there for sure! ๐Ÿ‘€ 27/ However, this is likely down the road as it could be challenging especially if multiple proof systems need to be aggregated. 28/ With all this great tech coming together in one framework, I'm sure @vistaralabs is going to melt faces. ๐Ÿ”ฅ If you're not bullish enough yet, check the demo below ๐Ÿ‘‡ x.com/_mayurc/status/1672649904445964288 29/ Or just go play around on testnet yourself ๐Ÿ‘‡ app.vistara.dev I hope you found this thread helpful ๐Ÿซก Follow me @zerokn0wledge_ for more on modular scaling, rollups & #ZK tech! ๐Ÿฅท Like/Repost of the below post highly appreciated as well! ๐Ÿ™
