Celestia vs EigenDA: different missions, not direct competitors

Quote247 words

Argues Celestia is an L1 building a native rollup ecosystem while EigenDA is an off-chain DA service for Ethereum rollups. They overlap only in serving DA to Ethereum-settling rollups, which is EigenDA's sole focus.

Key claims
EigenDA is not a blockchain and depends on Ethereum
Celestia's rollup ecosystem competes with Ethereum's rather than EigenDA directly
Are Celestia and EigenDA competitors? @CelestiaOrg = Ecosystem of apps (rollups) with the L1 providing shared security and interop with the aim to create positive network effects around Celestia's blockspace. Celestia can also serve high-throughput DA to other ecosystems like Ethereum, that's NOT the focus though. @eigen_da = A hyperscale, off-chain DA service for Ethereum rollups based on verifiable commitments and crypto-economic security bootstrapped on @eigencloud. It vastly improves security vs. centralized off-chain data availability commitees that systems like @arbitrum's AnyTrust or @StarkWareLtd's StarkEx use, and provides a much higher data throughput than the Ethereum L1, enabling disruptive innovation like real-time transaction processing on @megaeth' L2 within the Ethereum ecosystem. It is NOT a blockchain and NOT a native ecosystem of rollups of its own. Without Ethereum, there is no EigenDA. The two teams are hence on very different missions, which is also why the two solutions are designed very differently. What it comes down to wrt competition imo, is that its the @CelestiaOrg rollup ecosystem competing with the Ethereum rollup ecosystem (incl. @eigen_da), rather than @CelestiaOrg and @eigen_da directly competing in a market where the DA these solutions provide is a fungible commodity. They ultimately solve different problems for different use cases. The only area where @CelestiaOrg as a DA solution directly competes or overlaps with @eigen_da, is serving off-chain DA to rollups that settle on Ethereum, which as mentioned above, is NOT Celestia's focus. It is however exactly and only what @eigen_da is focused on.
QUOTING @nickwh8te
This is a good take. The key difference between Celestia and EigenDA is that Celestia is an L1 blockchain network, while EigenDA is a DA service. Celestia is an L1, like Ethereum or Solana. Celestia's goal is to build an ecosystem of applications on a platform of shared security
