Polygon AggLayer: ZK proof aggregation and atomic cross-chain composability

Thread725 words

Argues aggregation is modularity's end game: the AggLayer aggregates ZK proofs from CDK and external chains, settles on Ethereum, and offers atomic cross-chain bundles and async calls at low latency. Expects zkSVM and zkMove chains on CDK.

Key claims
A single ZK proof verifies state across connected chains
Atomic bundles execute all transactions or none
CDK ecosystem includes Manta, Immutable, OKX chain, Canto, Gnosis, Astar
Aggregation is the end game of modularity. @0xPolygon is the leader with its industry-first AggLayer. Unified liquidity across an entire ecosystem of diverse execution layers and everyone is still sleeping on it. I have a thesis and it's huge. Alpha-🧵 Modularity is my core focus in research & investments. I spend 100s of hours looking into the trends & narratives that define the space. Interop across a growing number of potentially use case optimized execution layers is the next frontier and aggregation is the key. Aggregation synthesizes the benefits of both integrated (monolithic) and modular architectures using ZK technology. In @0xPolygon's case, the AggLayer brings uniform cryptographic security and atomic composability across aggregated chains without sacrificing sovereignty. The AggLayer is chain-agnostic and lets devs connect any L1 or L2 chain into this composable framework. To the end user, this will feel like a single chain with unified liquidity and almost limitless scalability But let's take a step back. The AggLayer is a decentralized protocol that does two things: ✦ Aggregates ZK proofs from all connected chains. ✦ Ensures safety for near-instant atomic cross-chain transactions. It is the solution to the current fragmentation and the next step in the evolution of the @0xPolygon ecosystem of interconnected, ZK-powered L2s. A decentralized aggregation protocol, the AggLayer is operated by crypto-economically staked nodes. How does it work? In a nutshell, connected chains submit proofs & state updates to the AggLayer, where the proofs are aggregated and settled on Ethereum. It allows a single ZK proof to verify state across all chains in the ecosystem with Ethereum as the final security layer. Once any chain publishes a ZK proof of its latest state to the AggLayer, all other chains can trust the value (state) of that chain. Pretty wild, no? 👀 Relying on the resulting atomic x-chain guarantees, the connected chains can safely interoperate at super-low latencies without having to wait for finality on Ethereum. The AggLayer hence effectively acts as a fast finality layer too. The current statew is visualized below. Atomic cross-chain interactions are powerful. They enable a truly seamless user interaction and give users the experience of using a single, monolithic chain. What it means under the hood, is that the AggLayer allows users to submit a bundle of transactions to many chains across the Polygon ecosystem. With the guarantee that all transactions will be successfully executed, or none will be included. Additionally, the AggLayer enables asynchronous cross-chain calls. This is an incredibly powerful primitive that allows contracts to safely call contracts on other chains at super low latency, without being limited by Ethereum finality. For instance, a user could onramp via the OKX chain on Polygon and immediately deposit into a highly-liquid lending market on @aave on a different chain in one click, without needing to swap out of a wrapped synthetic asset! That's the aggregated future! 🌐 Do you follow me anon? Do you see how powerful this is? Aggregation is the endgame of modularity and it will unify an entire ecosystems of scalable networks into one interoperable ecosystem. An ecosystem built on the @0xPolygon CDK and featuring a broad specturm of potentially specialized execution layers. As the CDK expands, these will be running: ✦ zkEVM (Type 1) ✦ zkSVM (Solana's Sealevel VM) ✦ zkMove (MoveVM like Aptos or Sui) ✦ and more As a modular rollup SDK, the @0xPolygon CDK allows for the highest degree of customization, literally at every level of the tech stack. Hence, rollups can be customized to perfectly serve specific use cases. Within a composable framework, this is very powerful. The @0xPolygon ecosystem will literally melt faces. It will allow for highly optimized and scalable network configurations that for example run high-performance VMs on top of DA layers like @CelestiaOrg or @AvailProject and with Ethereum settlement through the AggLayer. Additionally, the AggLayer will allow any other L1 or L2 to connect to this interoperable framework and become a part of a unified ecosystem. Imajin the possibilities anon! 🤯 Already today, the @0xPolygon CDK ecosystem is impressive. It includes heavy-weights like: ✦ @MantaNetwork ✦ @Immutable ✦ @OKX chain ✦ @CantoPublic ✦ @gnosischain ✦ @AstarNetwork ✦ and more @0xPolygon's future is aggregated. The implications this has are big. The @0xPolygon ecosystem will be a centre stage of the upcoming bullrun and the AggLayer stands at its core. Are you ready, anon? 👀
