Movement Labs deep dive: M1 sequencer, M2 Move rollup and Fractal
Thread840 words
Explains Movement's architecture: M1 shared sequencer on Snowman consensus, M2 Move ZK rollup on Ethereum with Celestia DA, Block-STM parallel execution and a staged finality model. Claims 145k+ TPS and Move-EVM composability with native IBC.
Key claims
M2 can process 145k+ TPS
M1 uses Snowman consensus as shared sequencer
Both Move and Solidity contracts are composable on M2
Move rollups will be an epicentre of the bull market
My focus lies on @movementlabsxyz, a modular execution layer with @CelestiaOrg underneath that runs a parallel & EVM-compatible MoveVM
This will be valued in the billions and one of the biggest launches this year

1/ To reach mass adoption, execution layer innovation is key.
High-performance chains enable new use cases and provide a seamless UX to the end user with fast and cheap transactions.
2/ The EVM was the 1st programmable execution environment built on top of a blockchain-based trust layer. However, it does have significant limitations.
Execution layers that can overcome these limitations are hence highly sought after & will be the epicentres of this bull.
3/ More specifically, I'm talking about Move-based Virtual Machines (VMs) which will be a major narrative.
The purpose-built blockchain programming language developed by @facebook's @DiemAssociation initiative gave rise to upcoming L1 giants like @SuiNetwork or @Aptos.
4/ Move provides a more secure and more performant development and execution environment than the EVM.
It overcomes the sequential execution limitation that most EVM chains fall victim to and boasts a high level of security & expressivity, emphasizing ownership and safety.
5/ So let's talk @movementlabsxyz
M1 is the first blockchain in the Movement ecosystem, built on the Movement SDK.
It is a permissionless Move based blockchain using Snowman Consensus that serves as a shared sequencer for Movement SDK chains.
6/ M2 on the other hand is a permissionless Move-based L2, enabled by the @movementlabsxyz SDK & compatible with a whole array of runtimes (more later)
M2 is designed as a Move-based ZK rollup that validates state on Ethereum and posts transaction data to @CelestiaOrg.
7/ Inheriting Block-STM parallelization from @DiemAssociation, M2 uniquely brings parallelization to the modular stack as the first Modular MoveVM.
With localized fee markets & parallel execution, M2 will be able to achieve tens of 1000s of TPS within the Ethereum ecosystem.
8/ The transaction (tx) lifecycle on M2 is fairly simple:
Users submit a tx via the M1 sequencer network. M1 verifies & orders txs to construct the M2 ledger (sequencer finality).
For a more detailed process overview (accounting for different clients), check the visual!
9/ Until full finality, a tx passes different stages of finality after sequencer finality.
✦ DA finality: DA solution proves M2 data is available
✦ Validity proof finality: ZK proof generation on prover marketplace
✦ Full finality: ZK proof submitted to L1 verifier contract
10/ The use of Snowman Consensus allows M1 to have the high throughput needed for efficient sequencing.
As a leaderless consensus protocol that uses state-weighted sampling and rapid convergence, Snowman is a great choice for handling high volumes of transactions at low latency.
11/ M2 mainnet is set to become the first Ethereum L2 built on @CelestiaOrg with a Snowman Consensus based Shared Sequencing solution and a Move Virtual Machine for execution.
This results in a highly performant and super cheap rollup capable of processing 145k+ TPS.
12/ Another key feature of @movementlabsxyz is that it lets developers to deploy both Move and EVM (Solidity) contracts.
That allows applications from EVM chains but also Move L1s like @SuiNetwork or @Aptos can seamlessly migrate to M2.
13/ On the @movementlabsxyz execution layer, both languages are seamlessly composable, which allows applications to achieve interoperability that is impossible on isolated, language-specific L1s.
14/ Thanks to this native Move-EVM composability and a native IBC integration, @movementlabsxyz's M2 will unify liquidity from different ecosystems and become an important hub for cross-chain applications.
15/ This is evidenced by a quickly growing ecosystem of applications that choose to build on M2.
One exciting example I recently talked about is @EchelonMarket.

16/ Or @portal_finance, a cross-chain DEX powered by atomic L2 swaps.
Portal going live on M2 expands the reach of Move assets to Bitcoin & other non-EVM chains. Projects building on the Portal SDK (wallets & bridges) can easily add M2 asset swaps.

17/ With modularity at its core, @movementlabsxyz is set to release public goods and tooling to facilitate the adoption of the Move programming language across broader blockchain ecosystems.
18/ With @movementlabsxyz developers can launch secure, performant, and high-throughput Move VM rollups as easily as they do smart contracts.
A modular framework, the SDK will support various DA solutions incl. @CelestiaOrg or @NEARProtocol.
19/ This will give rise to an entire ecosystem of Move-based, modular rollups built on the @movementlabsxyz SDK.
Sharing the M1 sequencing layer, these execution layers will be seamlessly composable and feel like one monolithic chain to the end user.
20/ This is huge anon. @movementlabsxyz is a game-changer and nobody is talking about it yet.
It will be my bet for Move season and a key play on the modular narrative. I recommend to DYOR and position yourself accordingly.
