Astria explained: shared sequencing for based rollups on Celestia
Post418 words
Explains based rollups and why Astria built its own L1 with 2 second blocks and single-slot finality to sequence many rollups without pre-confirmations. Data goes to Celestia and Forma is the first rollup.
Key claims
Astria L1 has 2 second block time and single-slot finality on a CometBFT variant
Based rollups inherit Ethereum finality, which hurts UX
Forma is the first Astria rollup, posting data to Celestia
LAstria! Wait... What is Astria?

ā
Let me explain. š
@AstriaOrg is a shared sequencing layer for based rollups that publish data to @CelestiaOrg.
š¤ What does that mean?
Based rollups, also known as L1-squenced rollups, imply that the rollup network's sequencing (tx ordering) is done on the same L1 network on which the rollup is based.

ā
The term was coined by @drakefjustin and originates from the Ethereum ecosystem, where the idea has gained traction as a way of decentralizing rollups.
It is not without tradeoffs though as relying on Ethereum's finality can adversely affect user experience.
ā
However, researchers are currently exploring ways to impose faster finality in advance through inclusion lists or builder bonds.
ā
Another approach is to use @eigencloud's restaking network to build fast finality / settlement AVSes, which provide crypto-economically secured pre-confirmations .
ā
@nufflelabs is one example of a team building this in the form of the Nuffle Fast Finality Layer (NFFL).
ā
@Jskybowen however, has a different vision with @AstriaOrg.
ā
What he wants to do, is remove the need for pre-confirmations entirely.
ā
š¤ How?
ā
If the L1 is fast enough in terms of block time and finality, you don't need pre-confirmations.
ā
Ethereum isn't.
ā
That's why @Jskybowen built his own L1, designed to serve as the base layer of based rollups.
ā
A L1 that has a 2 second block time and single-slot finality, running a CometBFT variant to achieve consensus among validators.
ā
A L1 that is so fast, it is able to sequence 100s or 1000s of based rollups simultaneously, completely removing the need for pre-confirmations.
ā
These rollups will be fully decentralized and achieve crypto-economically secured finality within seconds.
ā
They are also seamlessly & atomically composable among each other in a completely permissionless manner.

The @AstriaOrg L1 where the rollups have bridge accounts, acts as a liquidity unification layer by efficiently routing funds across rollups.
ā
Data is posted to @CelestiaOrg, which enables highly cost-efficient execution layers.
ā
Thanks to the rollup-centric network design, all these execution layers can be meticulously tailored to serve specific use cases.
ā
The first example is @Formachain, a based & sovereign rollup on @AstriaOrg that posts data to Celestia. It's home to modularium(.)art, the leading NFT marketplace in the modular space. Sloths know.
Many more @AstriaOrg rollups to come.
