Particle Network Universal Accounts hands-on: chain abstraction without bridges
Quote351 words
First-hand test of Particle's Universal Accounts: a unified balance across chains, gas payable in any token and cross-chain transfers without bridging. Compares a multi-step bridge flow to a single stablecoin-to-ETH conversion on Base.
Key claims
Universal Accounts give one balance across chains and let users pay gas in any token
Users can convert stables directly to ETH on Base with no bridging
Chain abstraction is inevitable
Chain Abstraction is not the future. It's now.
I got early access to @ParticleNtwrk's Universal Accounts and had a chance to experience a true multichain UX first hand.
Keep reading for TL;DR and check the video for a demo.
UA Key Takeaways ⤵️
➤ Unified balance across chains
➤ Transfers to recipients on any chain
➤ Convert any token across any chain
➤ Pay gas in any token (by default cheapest)
➤ Chain Abstraction is Inevitable
UA User Example ⤵️
Scenario: You need $ETH on @base to pay a friend but only have stablecoins left on @BNBCHAIN, @optimism, and @arbitrum (and not enough gas to bridge).
What you did before Universal Accounts:
➤ Bridge $ETH to @optimism and @arbitrum for gas
➤ Get $BNB to @BNBCHAIN for gas
➤ Swap and bridge to $ETH on @base
➤ Done
In the process, you had to switch wallets at least twice, change network three times, find supported bridges and likely lost track of what you were doing in the first place while waiting 20min for your bridge transaction to confirm.
What you do with Universal Accounts (see video):
➤ Convert stables directly to $ETH on @base
➤ Done (with no bridging)
Even if your friend has a change of mind last minute and wants to be paid on @Optimism instead of @base in the end, UAs allow you to seamlessly send the funds across any chain without having to use a bridge once.
UA Conclusion ⤵️
@ParticleNtwrk's UAs provide a single, unified balance across all chains and allow users to bypass bridges entirely.
This significantly improves the UX, abstracting the complexity of the fragmented multichain backend towards the end user.
Personally, I liked the experience a lot, which made one thing clearer than ever: Chain Abstraction is Inevitable.
Sidenote: If you're wondering why I'm signing with Ravvy in the demo video, I chose to create my UA using an existing EOA. You can also do so using social login (e.g. email) and sign directly in-app.
