Why onchain financial privacy needs a multichain layer: Namada's MASP

Post464 words

Argues privacy is a fragmented-UX problem across transparent chains and explains how Namada's MASP, unified anonymity set, shielded actions over IBC and viewing keys address it. Notes privacy guarantees scale with shielded set size.

Key claims
Privacy guarantees are a function of shielded set size
A unified multi-asset pool is larger than any single-asset pool
Namada mainnet nearing phase 5 when NAM becomes transferable
Privacy matters. Would you feel comfortable with your bank account balance and all your tx data being publicly available? Probably not, right? Yet, most users don‘t seem to care when interacting onchain, giving up their financial privacy. The problem is that there is no „private UX“ for your onchain life. Most programmable blockchains are transparent, and the fact that you potentially operate across dozens of them, makes things exponentially worse. Sure you can use a mixer to obfuscate your transactions, use Zcash or Monero, maybe even one or the other more privacy-conscious DeFi app. But keeping your data private when interacting in a multichain DeFi ecosystem is tough. @namada fixes this by bringing to market a plug-and-play privacy layer for Web3 that consolidates assets fragmented across different chains into a single shielded asset hub, where you have full control over what you share. Enabled by Namada's Multi Asset Shielded Pool (MASP), which is based on @zcash's Sapling circuit and handles minting/shielding of assets using ZK proofs, Namada's USP is that it supports a single, unified anonymity set for all assets (whereas Zcash for example only supports shielded $ZEC txs). That's is not only great from a UX perspective (overcoming liquidity fragmentation across chains), but also significantly improves the privacy guarantees, which are ultimately a function of the shielded set size. Quite obviously, a unified pool that supports any assets across any chain, is potentially much larger than any single-asset pool could ever be. Through Namada's Conversion Circuit, you can also seamlessly convert assets within the pool. Yet that's not all. Through "shielded actions", you can even seamlessly execute composable cross-chain DeFi interactions across transparent chains via IBC (e.g., swaps, NFTs trades, etc.). You can also selectively choose to expose transaction data (via viewing keys) to specific parties (like auditors), balancing accountability and compliance with ironclad privacy. Not only great if you're an onchain trader or DeFi power user seeking to keep your strategies private, but also enabling the data protection standards that institutional players need to participate in DeFi. Okay cool, but why am I talking about this now? Namada mainnet is nearing the fifth and last phase of its launch, which means the $NAM token (powering governance, staking, fee payments, and public goods funding across the ecosystem) will finally become transferrable, marking the end of a successful launch process. Sure, given the time that has passed since the original airdrop and the fully liquid supply at TGE, community sentiment has suffered. But this is very strong tech, crucial public goods infra for our industry (basically allowing to retroactively fit privacy onto any chain/app) and privacy is just a use case a still heavily underestimated use case in terms of relevance. Developed by the @heliaxdev team, which is also building @anoma. Worth to DYOR.
