Data availability sampling as the fix for the rollup DA bottleneck
Post188 words
Argues data availability is the main rollup scaling bottleneck and that DAS light nodes can scale block space without raising validator requirements. Previews the contents of his DA research report.
Key claims
DAS on erasure coded blocks lets light nodes get near full node security if one honest full node exists
Block size can grow securely as the number of light nodes grows
Data availability is the main scaling bottleneck that rollups face today. ⚠️
To securely scale data availability without increasing validator requirements and consequently impairing network decentralization, we need data availability sampling light nodes.
Data availability sampling (DAS) on erasure coded blocks provides a security upgrade to light clients, allowing them to operate under almost the same security guarantees as full nodes (as long as there is at least one honest full node).
DAS enables elastic scaling of block space, as the block size can be securely increased with a growing number of light nodes in the network.
