Amid the dispute with Europe over Greenland, President Trump recently announced tariffs on various European countries, just to cancel them 4 days later at the @wef in Davos.
Through the full event cycle: BTC -5.97% and gold +4.58%.
That divergence tells you everything, and challenges the "digital gold" narrative around Bitcoin.
With the Greenland tariff saga providing a clean test for Bitcoin's response to policy uncertainty, our researcher @0xavarek investigated the results in our most recent @a1research__ piece.

While the tariff announcement hit hard, the response to the latest de-escalation when President Trump cancelled the tariffs in Davos is even more damning than the initial drop.
Why?
Equities recovered, gold held gains, and well... Bitcoin did neither, capturing downside without upside. A pattern that has now repeated in 7 of 8 major policy uncertainty events.
Two narrow exceptions:
- SVB 2023 when the crisis threatened banking infrastructure directly
- Post-liquidation recoveries when selling exhausts itself
Trade policy disputes meet neither criteria.
The fiscal mechanism underneath this is worth understanding.
The 2018-2019 China tariff precedent showed 92% of revenue got offset by bailouts. Add GDP contraction reducing other tax receipts, and net fiscal impact is neutral to negative while debt keeps growing.
Meanwhile Fed chair Powell is stuck. Fighting inflation means keeping rates high. Supporting employment means cutting them. He can't do both, or how he puts it: " there is no risk-free path".
The DOJ investigation into the Fed chair adds another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult macro environment.
Market structure looks healthier than before though. Leverage is flushed, selling pressure seems to be exhausting, and long-term holders started accumulating again in late December.
But ETF outflows during the event and Bitcoin's failure to rally when tariffs were cancelled suggest that fragility remains, and $80-85K is the support level to watch.
So what's the bottom line?
Bitcoin is not digital gold.
It's a high-beta macro asset that moves with risk appetite, not against it.
That's not bearish though.
The same forces creating short-term stress, fiscal deterioration, policy uncertainty, dollar pressure, are what make the longer-term case for alternatives like Bitcoin.
But the thesis only works when expectations match reality.
