Layer 3 scaling on StarkNet: recursive validity proofs explained
Thread317 words
Explains StarkWare's L3 vision where validity proofs from L3 are verified on an L2 that itself posts proofs to L1, multiplying compression, enabling cheap L3 to L3 interoperability and app-specific customization.
Key claims
L3 relates to L2 as L2 relates to L1
Recursive proof compression benefits multiply across layers
L2 to L3 on/off-ramping is much cheaper than L1 to L2
0/ The prohibitive cost of transactions on #Ethereum is driving it to become a settlement layer for L2. But does it really stop at L2? And what is L3? 馃憖
A 馃У on layer 3 scaling, enabled by #StarkNet's zk-rollup technology (0/9) 馃殌馃憞
1/ Well, #L3 relates to L2 just as #L2 relates to L1. L3 can be realized using validity proofs as long as the L2 is capable of supporting a verifier smart contract to verify said validity proofs
2/ When the L2 also uses validity proofs which are submitted to L1 (@StarkWareLtd鈥檚 StarkNet), this becomes an extremely scalable recursive zk-structure where the compression benefit of L2 proofs is multiplied by the compression benefit of #L3 proofs, enabling hyper-scalability
@StarkWareLtd 3/ Moreover, On/off-ramping flows between L1 and L2 are notoriously expensive. This is different between L2 and L3, allowing for much cheaper and simpler L2-L3 interoperability
@StarkWareLtd 4/ Also, independent #L3s will interoperate with each other via the cheap L2, not the expensive L1. This allows for very cheap L3-L3 interoperability
@StarkWareLtd 5/ Last but not least, #L3 architecture provides developers with improved control over the technology stack, meaning that potential L3 solutions like application-specific #StarkNet systems can be customized for better application performance
@StarkWareLtd 6/ As shown in the visualization above, Starkware鈥檚 vision of L3 for example includes:
@StarkWareLtd 7/ A #StarkNet with Validium data availability, for example for general use by applications with extreme sensitivity to pricing and a tolerance for lower security gurantees
@StarkWareLtd 8/ #StarkEx systems (such as those serving @dYdX, @Sorare, @Immutable and @DeversiFi) with Validium or Rollup data availability, immediately bringing battle-tested scalability benefits to #StarkNet
@StarkWareLtd @dYdX @Sorare @Immutable @deversifi 9/ Privacy #StarkNet instances (in the image also as L4) to allow privacy-preserving transactions without including them in public StarkNet
