Breaks down HIP-3 builder-deployed perps: 500,000 HYPE slashable stake, up to 50% fee share, Dutch auction slots every 31 hours. Covers the builder ecosystem, prediction market perps and HIP-3.1's halt-instead-of-slash oracle model.
Key claims
Builders stake 500,000 HYPE (about $23M) to deploy a market
Builders capture up to 50% of taker fees
One market slot opens via Dutch auction every 31 hours
HIP-3: Meet the Everything Exchange
Hyperliquid's recent mainnet deployment of HIP-3 marks a major milestone for the ecosystem, effectively turning HL from a high-performance, curated derivatives exchange (built on its own L1) into a permissionless, foundational infrastructure layer for all of finance.
The core thesis behind this expansion is that by decentralizing market deployment, the total addressable market expands significantly from merely crypto-native perpetuals to the entire $1.8 trillion global derivatives market (and novel areas like prediction markets, etc.).
1 ) From Product to Permissionless Protocol
The main change that HIP-3 brings, is the introduction of Builder-Deployed Perpetuals (BDPs). The framework allows any third-party entity to leverage @HyperliquidX’s battle-tested, low-latency orderbook engine (which already processes billions in daily volume) to deploy a perpetual market for literally anything.
This permissionless accessibility unlocks a huge spectrum of financial markets previously impossible onchain, including:
TradFi Onchain: 24/7 perpetuals on equities (NVDA, TSLA), indices (S&P 500), and commodities (Oil, Gold).
Exotic & Crypto-Native: Custom-weighted indices (e.g., "Top 10 AI Tokens"), volatility products, and perps on yield-bearing assets.
Novel Markets: Prediction markets on real-world events (e.g., elections, sports) and even futures on pre-IPO private equity.
2 ) Aligning Stakes and Incentives
However, while permissionless, the system's openness is not exactly a free-for-all. HIP-3 is underpinned by a robust economic and security model designed to filter for high-conviction builders and ensure long-term alignment:
High-Stakes Collateral: Builders must stake 500,000 $HYPE (a $23m dollar commitment at time of writing) to deploy a market. This is not a fee tho, it is slashable collateral.
Direct Revenue Share: In return for their stake and the responsibility of bootstrapping liquidity, builders capture up to 50% of the taker fees generated by their market. This provides a potentially large, uncapped ROI and a direct incentive to build markets that attract genuine volume.
Gated Deployment: To prevent network spam, new market "slots" are allocated via a $HYPE-denominated Dutch auction, with one opening every 31 hours. This ensures a predictable, economically gated cadence for new listings.
This unique model also spins the token flywheel, introducing additional, organic demand for $HYPE (as tokens are being bonded/locked to deploy markets) and increasing protocol revenue (thereby fueling further buybacks).
3 ) The Growing Builder Ecosystem
HIP-3 also acts as a major enabler/catalyst for a diverse ecosystem of specialized builders. The vision of an "Everything Exchange" is materializing as we speak through teams building on HIP-3, including:
- @tradeperps (by @hyperunit): Live on mainnet, building a "Decentralized Nasdaq" with 24/7 perps on US equities.
- @ventuals: Targeting pre-IPO stock prediction markets.
- @hyperddot: Building markets for physical, tradable RWAs.
- @auradotmoney: Exploring perps on T-rates.
- @hyenatrade: Developing an Ethena perp terminal for USDe-denominated pairs.
- @volmexfinance: Bringing volatility-based products (BVIV/EVIV indices) onchain.
- @nunchitrade: Deploying perps on various yield-bearing assets.
- @computeindex: Creating a market to hedge and speculate on the price of spot compute.
- @kinetiq_xyz: Leveraging HIP-3 to offer an "Exchange-as-a-Service" platform.
- @Hyperbetxyz: Utilizing the perp engine for a decentralized casino/betting platform.
This rapidly growing ecosystem's reach is further amplified by integrations with major wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, and Rabby that have been introduced in recent months, and an increasing number of frontends building on Hyperliquid, which in combination will make HL and these new markets accessible to millions of new users.
4 ) Prediction Market Perps
As the prediction markets vertical keeps gaining traction, one more specific, major narrative around HL also known as "prediction market perps" is especially likely to capture increasing attention as well.
Prediction market perps are definitely one of HIP-3's most compelling use cases, transforming traditionally static, unleveraged prediction markets into dynamic, capital-efficient trading venues.
Unlike platforms like @Kalshi and @Polymarket that offer fixed payouts with no leverage, HIP-3 enables continuous perpetual futures on binary events (elections, yes/no outcomes) and scalar markets (ranges like inflation rates or BTC dominance).
While binary markets pose significant challenges due to potential 0-to-100 jumps at expiry, requiring sophisticated safeguards like liquidation bands and leverage decay mechanisms, scalar markets (continuous ranges like inflation rates, temperature readings, or BTC dominance percentages) offer a safer near-term path thanks to their smoother price trajectories and proportional risk profiles.
By combining permissionless market creation, shared liquidity with Hyperliquid's existing infrastructure, and the potential for both leveraged trading and on-venue hedging, HIP-3 could be a major catalyst for event-based trading while offering professional traders the speed and capital efficiency they demand.
A crucial enabler ahead for this sub-vertical is also HIP-3.1, which we will briefly explore in the next section.
5 ) HIP-3.1: De-Risking the Oracle Layer
The initial HIP-3 design, while powerful, contains a potentially critical friction point for many non-crypto markets: its reliance on slashing for oracle reliability.
Validators cannot easily verify proprietary, high-speed offchain data (like stock prices), making builders hesitant to risk their entire stake on a data provider's uptime.
HIP-3.1, proposed in collaboration from @PythNetwork and @sedaprotocol, aims for a pragmatic solution by refining the security model:
Halt, Don't Slash (for reliability): It shifts the burden. Instead of immediate slashing for oracle issues, a 66% validator consensus can halt a market. Slashing is reserved for proven malicious behavior, reviewed during a 7-day cooldown.
Configurable Price Caps: It replaces the rigid 1% price-change cap with a deployer-set variable (0.01%-5%), which is key for handling the volatility of real-world assets or prediction markets.
Enforced Multi-Sigs: It mandates multi-sig oracle updaters, removing the potential single-point-of-failure risk arising from a single compromised key.
So what's the bottom line?
By unbundling its core engine and aligning incentives for builders, HIP-3 has repositioned Hyperliquid from "just" being the dominant perp DEX to being the foundational, permissionless perp infrastructure for all derivatives markets you can imagine.
